About the Infrathin Ribbon
In 2005
JoJo's School of Aesthetics developed a new award for subtle and intelligent
creative interventions into everyday life.
The award, titled the Infrathin Ribbon, is inspired by Marcel Duchamp's
notion of the 'infra thin'. Duchamp himself claimed
the notion was difficult to define, and chose to identify it through a series
of examples, including the following quotes from:
Marcel Duchamp, Notes, Arrangement and Translation by Paul Matisse, Boston:
G.K. Hall and Co., 1983.
4 The warmth of a seat (which has just been left) is infra-thin.
9 Velvet trousers - their whistling sound (in walking) by brushing of the 2 legs is an infra thin separation signaled by sound.
10 The
exchange between what one puts on view [the whole setting up to put on view
(all areas)] and the glacial regard of the
public (which sees and
forgets immediately). Very often this exchange has the value
of an infra thin separation (meaning
that the more a thing
is admired and looked at the less there is an inf. t.)
11 When the tobacco smoke smells also of the mouth which exhales it, the 2 odours marry by infra thin.
The Infrathin
Ribbon will be awarded annually by JoJo's School, and the winners
will be posted to this site.
The ribbon itself is pink (similar to the colour of
this text) and about one cubit in length, but is infinitely thin
and almost impossible to photograph. The award certificate is represented
below.
